A carer is defined as somebody who looks after a friend, relative or neighbour becuase they are old, are ill, have physical or learning disabilities, or because they have mental health problems.
 
If you are a carer you may feel that your own mental, emotional and physical health is suffering becuase of the stress and strain of caring for someone you love. You give so much to your loved ones and to society but all too often carers needs are forgotten about. Carers often experience health problems, financial difficulties and discrimination because of their commitments.

There are carers organisations that are working to change this situation and fight for the rights of carers and details of these are listed below.
As a carer it is important that you take time to look after yourself through diet, exercise and relaxtion. This will help you to feel better within yourself and more able to cope with the stress and strain of being a carer.
